Richmond International Raceway

RIR Fast Facts

  • The Wonderful Pistachios 400 will be the 111th Cup race run at Richmond International Raceway.
  • There have been 47 different winners and 49 drivers have won the pole.
  • 22 times the winner has started from the first position. That’s one out of every five races. Kyle Busch was the most recent to do it. That was in May last year.
  • Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and Terry Labonte lead active drivers with three wins each. Richard Petty won 13. Jeff Gordon has 5 poles. Petty and Bobby Allison are the all-time leaders with 8 poles each.
  • Mark Martin has 17 Top Fives and Labonte has 28 Top Tens. Petty had 34 and 41 respectively.
  • Gordon has led 1406 laps but Petty led an unbelievable 5136.
  • Kevin Harvick has not had a DNF in 21 starts. Michael Waltrip Did Not Finish 12 times in his 45 Cup starts.
  • Richard Petty is the youngest Richmond winner (it figures). He was 23 years, 9 months and 21 days old when he won the race on 4/23/1961. Harry Gant was 51 years, 7 months and 28 days old when he won on 9/7/1991.
  • Most people consider Richmond to be a short track, because it is only 3/4 mile in length. In fact, we group RIR with Martinsville and Bristol as Short Track Type tracks in the On Pit Row stats.  But to me, Richmond is much more like Phoenix and New Hampshire – two other flat tracks. Make sure you check driver performance and Loop Data at those two venues as well.
