Fearless Freddie, the Elmhurst Express and soon to be, NASCAR Hall of Fame member, Fred Lorenzen was honored before the start of the MyAFinStory.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway this past Sunday. There has been a constant stream of Twitter photos and Facebook posts, of todays' drivers posing with Lorenzen at the track. And there should be a flood of them.
The only driver to win 20 Cup races in his first 100 starts. Lorenzen won 26 times in the Cup Series, including the 1965 Daytona 500. He was the first driver to win the Atlanta 500 three straight times and the first to win four straight at Martinsville Speedway.
Illinois native and resident, Fearless Freddie suffers from dementia now. He remains one of the sports' most popular drivers and it was great to see him at the track again.
