Welcome to my weeklong Fantasy NASCAR Primer Series. This five-day series will take you through all of the ins, outs, straightaways, doglegs and tri-ovals of fantasy NASCAR. Here’s a breakdown to what’s in store:

Monday 1/18 – Allocation leagues

Tuesday 1/19 – Draft leagues

Wednesday 1/20 – Salary cap leagues

Thursday 1/21 – Changes to Yahoo! Fantasy Auto Racing driver lists

Friday 1/22 – Inside an expert fantasy draft

Unlike a draft league where you own your drivers all season or a salary cap league where any driver can be purchased, an allocation format has a maximum for the number of starts per driver. When the number of starts is limited, the margin for error shrinks. In order to conserve starts of top drivers you’ll need to rely heavily on sleepers and riding hot streaks.

Like in all fantasy games, be aware of the rules. The number of starts depends on the game. Here at On Pit Row you’ve got one shot per driver in the One & Done game. At Yahoo! it’s nine starts per season. At FOX Sports it’s four starts per driver in the first half of the season, then a new set of four in the second half.

Be sure to join On Pit Row’s Yahoo! Fantasy group for a prize pack that includes:

•    5 DVD set – Dale Earnhardt – 10 Greatest Wins
•    The Blount Report: NASCAR’s Most Overrated and Underrated Drivers, Cars, Teams, and Tracks by ESPN’s Terry Blount
•    No Fear Racing (Boris Said) T-Shirt
•    Kevin Harvick Bobblehead

Expert advice

· Yahoo! has three tiers of drivers, mixing things up in the C-List ranks is a great way to set yourself apart from other owners in order to outscore them.

· Yahoo! gives bonus points to the top-four qualifiers. Mix in a few drivers who have a shot at the pole, even if you don’t intend to start them. You’ll still get the bonus points! Last year, despite finishing 23rd in points, Martin Truex, Jr. won three poles and started inside the top-four a total of seven times.

· History has shown Jimmie Johnson turns it on late in the season, so your strategy should reflect this– keep some No. 48 starts in your pocket for the Chase.

· Most games have groups you can join and create; invite your friends to compete!
