NASCAR Fantasy Racing Preview: Emory Healthcare 500 Motor Speedway
September 1, 2010
The return trip to Atlanta Motor Speedway is a great time for fantasy owners to take advantage of the three races held on 1.5-mile tracks with 24 degrees of corner banking. Texas Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway have also hosted one event each, so I’ve put together another Fantasy Tool to highlight the best finishers from those races and provided a link to last year’s version.
Chasing the pole at Atlanta Motor Speedway
- Juan Pablo Montoya… Started third in March at Atlanta, fourth last September. Has started 10th or better seven of the last eight this season with two poles.

Contender or Pretender: Atlanta 2
August 31, 2010
Kurt Busch (Contender) – Kurt Busch has won the last two Atlanta spring races and in the COT era he’s been phenomenal. In the five Atlanta COT races he has the second best driver rating (109.6), and he’s led an average of 75 laps per race.
Kurt Busch has also proven himself on other similar tracks this season (Charlotte and Texas). His average finish on quad oval tracks for the year is second. In 2002 Kurt Busch won a rain delayed race at Atlanta that ended under the lights.
Jimmie Johnson (Pretender) – Besides Jimmie Johnson’s lack of luck and momentum at the moment Atlanta really hasn’t been a good place for Johnson in the COT. Almost all of Jimmie Johnson’s success at Atlanta came in the old car. In the five COT races Jimmie has only finished in the top ten twice. In 2008 Johnson finished second but that was largely the product of fresh tires at the end of the race, not because his car was that good.
Carl Edwards (Contender) – With the continued reemergence of Roush Racing Carl Edwards will certainly play into the mix for the win. He’s always been very successful at this track and knows his way to victory lane. Edwards has had some bad recent finishes at Atlanta but don’t let that scare you off.
Mark Martin (Pretender) – Where can you trust Mark Martin now? My answer would be nowhere until he gets a streak of good finishes going. In the last three Atlanta races Martin has an average start of fourth but don’t get suckered in just because of that. His average running position in these races is 14th and his average finish is 23rd.
Kasey Kahne (Contender) – Kasey Kahne is the defending champion of this race. Last year he started second and ran in the top five for almost the entire race. Even though Kasey Kahne didn’t win the spring race this year he still managed to have the best driver rating (138.1). His quad oval average finish for the year is seventh.
Ryan Newman (Pretender) – If you like qualifying you’ll like Ryan Newman. At one point in his career he won six straight poles at Atlanta. Last year Ryan Newman finished 9th, but to find his next Atlanta top ten you have to look all the way back to 2004.

NASCAR Fantasy Racing Preview: Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway
August 18, 2010
NASCAR’s amphitheatre, Bristol Motor Speedway, is known for aggressive driving and carnage on the race track. However, the resurfacing in 2007 added variable banking and opened up additional lanes. The beating and banging may be dialed down a bit but the night race at Bristol is among the biggest dates on the NASCAR calendar.
Chasing the pole at Bristol Motor Speedway
- Jimmie Johnson… Started fourth in March, best average start this season (7.5).
- Kurt Busch… Started second in March, second-best average start this season (9.1).
- Greg Biffle… Started fourth and second last year.
- Juan Pablo Montoya… Started sixth in March. Average start of 2.8 in his last three starts this season.

Contender or Pretender: Bristol 2
August 17, 2010
Kyle Busch (Contender) - No driver is even close to matching the dominance Kyle Busch has displayed at Bristol in the COT era. He’s won nearly half the races (three out of seven), and only once has he finished outside the top ten. His Bristol average finish in the COT is 5.71. What makes Kyle Busch really good at Bristol is that he attacks the track. Evidence of this is the 899 laps he’s led in the COT.
Jimmie Johnson (Pretender) – Jimmie Johnson won the spring Bristol race and was really good last year but throughout his career Bristol’s been a rough place for him. With the performances we’ve seen out of him in recent weeks and his current inability to find his lucky horseshoe picking Johnson definitely isn’t the way to go this weekend. His average finish in the summer race 18.75.
Denny Hamlin (Contender) – Denny Hamlin is unquestionably the best driver who’s never won at Bristol. Hamlin nearly won the first COT race at Bristol and has been close on several occasions. Hamlin’s had problems in three COT races at Bristol (fuel pick up issues, engine, and hitting the wall) but his problem free average finish is fourth.
Mark Martin (Pretender) – Last year Martin performed remarkably well at Bristol but from a career long standpoint his numbers aren’t so good. Only once in the sixteen prior races to 2009 has Martin finished in the top ten. These numbers include 2007 and 2008 when Martin avoided this track because he doesn’t like it. I expect some sort of drama out of this team every week for the rest of the regular season.
Kurt Busch (Contender) – All of Kurt Busch’s wins at Bristol are in the old car but the Blue Deuce was strong in the spring race. He led a race high 278 laps and he has the crew chief who set up the car that swept Bristol last year. Look for Kurt Busch to once again be a contender.
Clint Bowyer (Pretender) – Just like Martin I expect drama out of the 33 team every week until the regular season is over. In the last five Bristol races Clint Bowyer’s finished worse each consecutive race (3rd, 7th, 13th, 21st, 40th). If this trend continues than his points advantage over Martin will be gone.
