NASCAR Fantasy Racing Preview: AMP Energy Juice 500 at Talladega

October 27, 2010

The constant need to stay in the draft can create a lot of movement throughout the field in a restrictor plate race. Because drivers can lose numerous spots on any given lap, average running position (my favorite loop data statistic) means little at Talladega Superspeedway. However, some drivers have found a way to put down a consistent average and are among the most reliable options this week. In addition, drivers that have avoided trouble in the three plate races already held thus far should be valued at a premium.

Contender or Pretender: Talladega 2

October 26, 2010

Kevin Harvick (Contender) – Do you remember Kevin Harvick being involved in any wrecks this year? None come to my mind. He’s done a remarkable job avoiding problems on the track in 2010. Also lets not forget he’s been pretty good on restrictor plate tracks this year and has won two out of the three races.

Jeff Gordon (Pretender) – The Chase hasn’t been nice to Jeff Gordon and neither has Talladega in recent years. Jeff Gordon won the first COT race at Talladega but since then he hasn’t finished better than 19th. His average finish in the last five races here is 27.2.

Kurt Busch (Contender) – Surviving the big one can be a tough task for many NASCAR drivers. Kurt Busch has never won at Talladega, but I don’t think that’s what is important to fantasy racers this weekend. Fantasy racers just don’t want their picks to crash. In nineteen races at NASCAR’s biggest track Kurt Busch has finished in the top ten thirteen times. At one point in his career he had seven straight top eight finishes.

Denny Hamlin (Pretender) – In the last nine Talladega races Hamlin’s finished in the top five three times. In his other six races he finished 20th or worse. When Hamlin comes down to Alabama he comes to race. What will he do this time, race or ride in the back?

Jimmie Johnson (Contender) – Guess who has the best five year average at Talladega? That’s right its Jimmie Johnson. Johnson races the spring and fall Talladega races differently. In the spring Jimmie decides to race, and in the fall he waits to strike. In the last three spring races his average finish is 24.6. His average finish in the last three fall races is 5.6.

Greg Biffle (Pretender) – Greg Biffle runs into trouble a lot at Talladega. He’s also run into his fair share of problems in the Chase. He’s lucky Clint Bowyer was penalized at New Hampshire other wise he would be dead last in the Chase standings. Despite his two recent top tens at Talladega I would highly recommend you avoid Biffle this race.

NASCAR Fantasy Racing Preview: TUMS Fast Relief 500 from Martinsville Speedway

October 20, 2010

The half-mile, paperclip track known as Martinsville Speedway is among the most unique tracks in NASACAR. The long asphalt straightaways are twin drag strips connected by concrete corners. There are very few options when it comes to unearthing a legitimate sleeper for fantasy lineups as the elite drivers at Martinsville rarely disappoint. The final flat track race of the season is coming up shortly at Phoenix International Raceway. Drivers that find success here could also be riding high in the desert.

Contender or Pretender: Martinsville 2

October 19, 2010

Jimmie Johnson (Contender) – In seventeen races at Martinsville Jimmie Johnson has only finished outside the top ten once. The one time he didn’t finish among the front runners was in his first career start at Martinsville back in 2002. Earlier this year Johnson finished 9th but guess what, he was already testing things for this very race back in March.

Jeff Burton (Pretender) – Jeff Burton raced like a contender earlier this year (Yahoo race chart). He had the best car but late in the race bad luck bite him (flat tire). This really has been the story of this team throughout the season so why should things change now? Jeff Burton has one win at Martinsville and an average finish of 14.8.

Denny Hamlin (Contender) – I really like Denny Hamlin at Martinsville, I like him to finish right behind Johnson. In ten starts at this track Hamlin has finished in the top ten nine times and he has collected three clocks. In the last five Martinsville races Hamlin has won three times and has an average finish of second.

Greg Biffle (Pretender) - Don’t use Fords here. I’ve seen them have tons of brake problems over the years that it’s really stupid to even flirt with the idea of using them. Greg Biffle has the worst average finish (22.3) and worst driver rating (64.6) among the Chasers.

Jeff Gordon (Contender) – Gordon better pick up the pace at Martinsville or Jimmie Johnson is going to pass him in the win column. In thirty five races at Martinsville where lots of bad things can happen Jeff Gordon has an amazing 6.7 average finish. As long as the track doesn’t jump up and bite him he’s a near lock for a top five.

Kurt Busch (Pretender) – Kurt Busch is a previous winner at Martinsville but avoid him at all costs this weekend in the Tums Fast Relief 500. His last top ten at Martinsville was back in 2005. In twenty races the 2004 champ has only collected four top tens at NASCAR’s smallest track.

NASCAR Fantasy Racing Preview: Bank of America 500 from Charlotte

October 13, 2010

A total of four races have already been held on the three 1.5-mile cookie-cutter tracks with 24 degrees of corner banking, including the June event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Be sure to also include the results from Atlanta Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway when making fantasy selections. While the wear on each of these tracks will cause the speeds to vary, the skills and setup required to succeed are similar.
