NASCAR Fantasy Racing Preview: Coca Cola 600 from Charlotte

May 26, 2010

Two races have already been held on 1.5-mile cookie-cutter tracks with 24 degrees of corner banking, similar to Charlotte Motor Speedway. The results from Atlanta Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway should play an important role to making fantasy selections. The wear on each of these tracks will cause the speeds to vary, but the skills and setup required to succeed are similar.

Top 10 Drivers thus far on 1.5 mi x 24° tracks

Kurt Busch 1 4 2.5

          Contender Or Pretender: Charlotte

          May 25, 2010

Jimmie Johnson (Contender) – Forget the talk about Jimmie Johnson struggling with the spoiler, his problems  aren’t spoiler related. Last fall Jimmie Johnson put on a dominating performance at Charlotte. He won from the pole and had a 2.8 average running position. His last previous win at Charlotte was back in the fall 2005 race. Between his 2006 through fall 2009 Charlotte winless streak (7 Races) Johnson finished in the top 15 every race except once when his engine blew up. This track isn’t called Lowes anymore but it’s still Jimmie Johnson’s track.

Carl Edwards (Pretender) – Carl Edwards has great numbers at Charlotte but he was so bad last fall I wouldn’t even be tempted to pick him. Last fall he finished 39th and I’m not going to give him the old engine blew up excuse this time (It did but after he struggled all race). To make picking Carl Edwards even more of a risk his data at the other similar tracks since then is limited. He crashed last fall at Texas, he crashed this spring at Atlanta, and he crashed late in the race at Texas earlier this year (ran competitively).

Kyle Busch (Contender) – Early in his career Charlotte was a real bad track for Kyle Busch. If the Coca Cola 600 were to be run to completion last year Kyle Busch unquestionably would’ve been the driver to beat. Over the last five Charlotte races his average finish is 4.8. Kyle Busch is the hottest driver in NASCAR now and he’ll definitely be a contender in the longest race of the season.

Clint Bowyer (Pretender) – Bowyer has really been struggling as of late and I don’t see it ending this weekend. In the COT Clint has pretty consistent numbers. His average starting position (19.8) and his average finish (19.8) are exactly the same. Bowyer has never led a single lap at Charlotte in the COT.

Kasey Kahne (Contender) – In the last 4 Charlotte races (COT Era) Kasey Kahne has finished in the top ten every time. Kyle Busch is the only other driver to accomplish this feat. Where Kasey Kahne has Busch beat is in wins and top fives. In the COT Kahne has finished in the top five 75% of the time. Kahne was also extremely competitive earlier this year at Atlanta on the long runs. In long races you can always expect long runs.

Ryan Newman (Pretender) – Last year in this race Ryan Newman finished second. Everyone knows it rained but Newman really wasn’t that good at all. Newman only ran in the top fifteen 41.9% of the race last year. I plan on avoiding Newman at all costs this weekend.

NASCAR Fantasy Racing Preview: Autism Speaks 400 from Dover Downs

          May 12, 2010

Expect another physical race at “The Monster Mile” known as Dover International Speedway, one of the few tracks in NASCAR to feature a concrete surface. Dover is shorter than Darlington Raceway, but features similar banking. While the car setup will be different, a similar style of driving can be applied to both tracks and can help make a driver successful in consecutive weeks.

          1. David Reutimann… Won the pole and started fifth last year at Dover.

          Contender Or Pretender : Dover

          May 11, 2010

          Jimmie Johnson (Contender) -
The performances Jimmie Johnson had at Dover last year should be the definition of domination in NASCAR. Last year he led 569 laps and no other driver even cracked 100. In the spring race Jimmie Johnson posted a perfect 150 driver rating and in the fall race his driver rating was a near perfect 149.2. His average running position in both races last year was 2.1 and he only raced outside the top fifteen for a grand total of 5 laps.

Denny Hamlin (Pretender) – Dover has never been a good track for Denny Hamlin. All of his good finishes are heavily stacked early in his career. The last time Hamlin finished in the top twenty was back in 2007. Last falls race when he finished 22nd snapped his streak of four consecutive finishes outside the top 35.The best race in Hamlin’s  career at Dover was the fall 2007 race.  It was a good race for him from a competitive standpoint and it created a very memorable YouTube moment.

Jeff Burton (Contender) – Jeff Burton’s been awful in closing races this year. Whether it’s a flat tire or running over equipment in the pit box if Jeff Burton’s going to win a race these things need to stop. Jeff Burton is ready to win and lets remember this was the track where Jeff Burton snapped an old long losing streak. Last year at Dover Burton finished sixteenth in both races. His average finish over the last four years is 9.1.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Pretender) – Throughout his career Dover has never really been a good place for him despite his 2001 win. In the last ten races at Dover Earnhardt Jr. has 1 top five and two top tens. Last year in the spring race he finished 12th and looked competitive at times. In the fall race he was in the top fifteen zero percent of the time and had an average running position of 22nd.

Ryan Newman (Contender) – Newman swept this track in 2003 but the impressive thing is that in the spring race that year he held off Jeff Gordon without power steering. Even in Newman’s bad years at Penske he still could get the job done at Dover. Last year he finished 8th and tenth. His career average finish at Dover is 10.3.

Brian Vickers (Pretender) – Did you know that Brian Vickers hasn’t led a single lap at Dover over the last 5 years? In twelve career races at Dover Vickers has finished in the top ten only once. His average running position last year was 19.8 and his driver rating was 64.1. He completed all but one lap so his numbers are truly representative of how he performed last year on the Monster Mile.
